PITTSFIELD- Ann Carty, 76, of 53 Pollock Ave passed awaySaturday, November 7 at Berkshire Medical Center. Born February 8, 1933, the daughter of Thomas and Alice Harrigan King, she was educated by local schools, graduating from St. Joseph High School. She then attended College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee MA, earning her Bachelors degree. She then went to work as a teacher at the Williams elementary school in Pittsfield. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. She leaves her husband William F. Carty, whom she married December 26, 1957, two daughters, Denise Bartz of Pittsfield, MA, and Victoria Carty of Santa Ana, CA, three sons Timothy Carty of Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA, Terence Carty of Dalton, MA, and Gregory Carty of Pittsfield, MA, two Grandsons Tyler May and Andre Carty and one Granddaughter Marianna Bartz. FUNERAL NOTICE-A Liturgy of Christian burial for Ann Carty will be held on Thursday the 19th of November at 11AM at the Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. James Joyce officiating. PITTSFIELD- Charlotte Guttmann 86, of 225 S. Mountain Rd passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday the 10th. Charlotte was born in Bergtal, Germany daughter of the late Karl and Auguste Kochstater Sachs. She was educated in Germany and then came to the United States in 1957 with her husband and children becoming a U.S. citizen in 1964. Along with being a homemaker, she worked at the former Sherwood- Wendell Hotel, the former Sprague Electric Co. and the former Schaeffer-Eaton retiring in 1988. Mrs. Guttmann was the “Soul of her family”; she enjoyed cooking, gardening and caring for her family. She was a member of the Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and its Ruth Circle. She also belonged to the German- American Club. She was predeceased by her husband W. Karl Guttmann whom she married May 15, 1945. Survivors include her sister Margrit Rennspiess of Duisburg, Germany, her daughter Silvia Boulger and her husband John Sr., a son Werner Guttmann and his wife Judith, Granddaughter Sarah Guttmann, Grandsons Shawn Boulger and his wife Heather, Brian Boulger and his wife Emily, Daniel Boulger and his wife Victoria and Jason Boulger. She also leaves great-grandchildren Logan, Ryan, Elizabeth and Jack, along with friends and family here and in Germany. FUNERAL NOTICE- Services for Mrs. Guttmann will be held at Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Thursday November 19th at 2 PM with the Rev. Dr. Peter Boehringer officiating. PITTSFIELD- Donald H. McCoy, 86, formerly of 587 Hancock Rd., died Thursday, November 19 at Mt. Greylock Extended Care Facility where he had been a resident since January 2007. Born April 4, 1923 in Dalton, the son of Roger and Beulah Hall McCoy, he was a 1940 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Don entered military service during World War II in September of 1943. Basic infantry training was a Fort Eustis, VA where he received additional training as a member of anti-aircraft battery. Assigned to Company C, 376th Combat Support Engineers, 7th Army he constructed bridges and other structures across Northern Africa, Corsica, and in Southern France crossing the Rhine River in Germany, bridge building was his company’s specialty. Mr. McCoy was a truck driver first for Brown’s Express Lines and then for Red Star Express Lines, retiring in 1985 after 45 years of union service. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, music, playing golf at Pontoosuc Country Club was an avid Red Sox fan. His wife the former Doris E. King whom he married August 17, 1946 died June 22, 2000. Mr. McCoy leaves his five daughters Lynn Kogut of Pittsfield, Janice Butler and her husband Chris of Cheshire, Sharon Turner and her husband Mark of Franklin, IN, Nancy Carr and her husband Ernie of Hernando, FL, and Donna McCoy of Lanesboro, eleven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and six nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Doris Perry and a brother Darwin McCoy. FUNERAL NOTICE- Funeral Services for Mr. Donald H. Lenox- William M. Furey II, a resident of Kimball Farms in Lenox and a former Berkshire Life Insurance Co. executive, died peacefully in Lenox, Massachusetts on November 27, 2009. He was 83 years old. Bill was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 27th, 1926. He was the son of Martha R. and W. Rankin Furey, was raised in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, and graduated from Shady Side Academy in 1944. His family moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1944 and Bill attended Yale University where he graduated in 1948 after briefly serving in the Army Air Corps in 1945. After Yale, he joined Berkshire Life in its Pittsburgh office and married Elizabeth Reed on June 21, 1952. He became General Agent of the Pittsburgh office and then in 1960 moved to the Berkshire’s Pittsfield headquarters. Bill rose to serve as Vice President of Field Planning & Manpower Development where he oversaw all of Berkshire’s national field agent offices. His retirement in 1991 marked the end of 115 years and five generations of his family working at Berkshire Life. Bill had a long career as a leader in many Berkshire County volunteer organizations. He twice served as Chairman of the Berkshire American Red Cross and was active in the Berkshire United Way where he co-chaired the 1996 annual campaign. Bill’s favorite charitable activity was serving on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Pittsfield where he led the 2002 Capital Campaign that raised over $2 million for the club. He was a past President of the Country Club of Pittsfield, was on the board of the Berkshire Life Charitable Foundation, and served on the finance committee of the First Church of Christ, Congregational. Bill was known by all as a passionate and competitive athlete in paddle tennis and golf where he had a single digit handicap and seven career hole-in-ones. He was also a talented watercolor artist and aficionado of 1940s big band swing music. Above all, everyone knew Bill for his outgoing embrace of all friends and a magnificent sense of humor. Bill was preceded in death by his sister Martha Jane Furey Kittredge, his mother Martha Reicks Furey, his father W. Rankin Furey, and his grandson Tyler Spadaccini. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Elizabeth Reed Furey of Kimball Farms in Lenox; four children Lisa F. Spadaccini of North Conway, New Hampshire, William M. Furey III of Reno, Nevada, Tim R. Furey of Easton, Maryland, Peter R. Furey of Lafayette, Colorado; their spouses Skip, Beth, and Resa and seven grandchildren – Katie, Zachary, Peter, Natalie, Lindsay, Kira, and Anna. A memorial will be held on the morning of December 12th, 2009 at First Church of Christ, Congregational in Pittsfield. PITTSFIELD- Alan Harrington, 49, of 1718 West Housatonic St, died Sunday, suddenly and unexpectedly at home after a brief illness. He was the son of George and Eilene Pires Harrington, he attended local schools graduating from Taconic High School. He went on to work at Arace Datson on West Housatonic St and then Currier Printing for 20 years. He was an avid lifetime fan of the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, and the New York Yankees. He leaves his wife the former Erin Squires whom he married September 30, 1994, and his son Alexander J. Harrington of Pittsfield, his father George Harrington of Pittsfield, his brothers George Harrington Jr. and Thomas Harrington of Pittsfield, and his sister Kellie Alexander of Pittsfield he also leaves many Aunts and Uncles and many Cousins, Nieces and Nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Eilene Harrington and his sister Patricia Farney. Close friends Terri Lampiasi, Michael Toner and Rick Blaney, and big John Morrow and also many other friends. Together again! Pittsfield – Gerald Louis Fick, 74, of Sherwood Drive passed away Monday, November 30th at BMC after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is joyfully reunited with his wife Marge. Jerry was born on May 9, 1935 to Henry John and Margaret Loretta Gilchrist Fick in Detroit, Michigan. Named after Gerald “Gee” Walker of the Detroit Tigers, he was the oldest of 6 children. He attended schools, in Buffalo, NY, Pottsville, PA, and North Cambridge, MA. He graduated from Matignon HS in 1953 and from the University of Notre Dame in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He married Marjorie Ann Simon of Assumption, OH on October 6, 1962. Although never a member of the armed services, Jerry most honorably served his nation, directly supporting the United States Navy’s Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) Program. Over a 52 year career that spanned three generations of submarines and four companies, he was most noted for his steadfast devotion to the sailors that served in defense of our great nation. His service to the nation was highlighted by a FBM Achievement Award in 2002 and a 50 Year Service Award in 2008 from the U.S. Navy’s Director of Strategic Systems Programs. He died while on “active duty”, having not yet retired from General Dynamics. Jerry enjoyed friends, family, golf, and reading. He also enjoyed a good game of pool and a cold Yuengling beer. His high threshold of pain was evidenced by his devout support of Notre Dame football and Detroit Tiger baseball. Also, he would never pass up a chance to watch any movie starring John Wayne. He was predeceased by his wife Marge, his parents, his brother Henry, and his sister Margaret. He is survived by his three sons; Michael, Gregory (wife Tracy, children; Ann, Grace, Will and Jack) and David (wife Beth, children; Sam, Abbey, and John). He is also survived by two sisters Judy Quill (Spence), Joyce Callie (Albert), his brother Louis (Brenda), and his mother-in-law, Bertille Simon.
