PITTSFIELD- Dorothy L. Sumner, 92, formerly of Rose Manor died Sunday, January 3, at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox. Born in South Portland, Maine on January 18, 1917 the daughter of Alfred and Ella Knowles Lovejoy, she was a 1935 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Dorothy worked as a secretary at General Electric for 15 years following WWII. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pittsfield where she was a member of the Women’s league for 75 years as well as the girl’s league. She was a member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club, the AARP, volunteered at RSVP and the Red Cross for many years. She is predeceased by her husband’s, Lt. Ronald F. Shepard who was shot down during WWII and Chester C. Sumner who died November 10, 1001, whom she married January 12, 1957. She leaves her daughter Bonnie J. Sumner of Pittsfield, son Ronald F. Shepard of West End, NC, sister Betty Karns of Raynham, MA, grandchildren Karen Macdonald, Laura Clerici, and Andrew Shepard and great granddaughter’s Ainsley Macdonald, Kenley Macdonald, Mazey Clerici, and Jade Shepard. FUNERAL NOTICE- A memorial service for Dorothy L. Sumner will be held Saturday (January 9, 2010) at 11am at the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Rennie pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. There will be an hour of visitation the day of the service from 10am until the time of the service. DALTON- Edwin N. Liljeholm, 71, formerly of Pembroke passed away Sunday at his daughter’s home in Dalton with whom he had resided. Born September 27, 1938 in, the son of Sydney and Edna Hill Liljeholm, he graduated from Brighton High School. Mr. Liljeholm was a buyer for Building 19, retiring in 2001. He was a member of the Phoenix Lodge of Masons; he enjoyed participating in poker tournaments at Station 2, a former member of the High Street Fire Department and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ed was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and especially enjoyed his sporting weekends with Lou & Helen. He married the former Leonna Moore on August 26, 1961; she passed away April 12, 2009. He leaves his son Edwin N. Liljeholm Jr. and his wife Joanne of Jeffersonville, VT, daughter Tara Ferrin and her husband Raymond of Dalton, MA, six grandchildren Katelyn of Hanson, MA , Amber, and Jasmine Liljeholm of Jeffersonville, VT, Raymond, Christopher and Jonathan Ferrin of Dalton, two great grand children Zachary Liljeholm and Emma Bent, and a sister Dianne MacKay of Florida. Edwin was predeceased by a sister Johanna Niesolowski and a brother Harvey Coughlin. PITTSFIELD- Lawrence “Larry” Tower 85, of 580 Holmes Road, passed away at Hillcrest Commons on Sunday January 17. Born on July 4, 1924, he was the son of Loring and Edna Brewer Tower. He went to local schools graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1942. He attended Bryant College in Providence, Rhode Island for a semester before going into the service. He served in the army during WWII in the Army Air Corps, and 22 years in the Air National Guard where he retired as captain and Unit Commander. Larry was also a general aviation pilot with the Civil Air Patrol for many years. He was interviewed as part of the Veterans History Project in 2005 through the Dalton Council on Aging. He worked at Wooliver Roofing for 25 years as a sheet metal worker, then for 12 years as a Culligan Water salesman, retiring in 1986. Following retirement he worked at the Wellington Funeral Home. He was a member of Elder Services and the meals on wheels program where he delivered meals, and he was involved with Cerebral Palsey as a coach for the athletic team for 12 years. He was active in BCARC where he served as president for three years, and volunteer of the year for RSVP of Massachusetts in 1997. Survivors include his wife the former Ruth M. Gleason whom he married July 23, 1946, two daughters Janice Robinson and Elaine Gentile, and a son Robert Tower, all of Pittsfield; a brother George Tower of Florida, two granddaughters Brianna Rhodes of California and Mei Mei Robinson of Pittsfield, two great grandchildren Marley and Hendrix Rhodes, and many nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE- Memorial services for Larry Tower will be held at the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME PITTSFIELD on Monday January 25, 2010 at 11 AM with the Rev. Dr. Luis E. Benvides pastor of the First United Methodist church officiating. Following cremation burial will be at the Convenience of the family. PITTSFIELD- James T. Carpenter, 59, of 310 Cloverdale St. died Saturday, January 23, at Berkshire Medical Center following a brief illness. Born on September 29, 1950 in Pittsfield the son of Anita Shartrand, he attended Wahconah High School. Mr. Carpenter worked for eighteen years at General Electric in the Power Transformer Manufacturing division in the tank shop. For the past 4 years he has been an over the road truck driver for Covenant Transport. Jim enjoyed fishing, camping, watching NASCAR, enjoyed chatting with friends on the computer. He was a volunteer firefighter in Hinsdale for many years, and was on the Firemen’s Muster Team at the same time. He leaves his wife Jane Vanderbeek whom he married September 14, 1996, two daughters, Shannon Delasco and her husband Tom of Lenox, Tiffany Carpenter of Pittsfield, stepson Bryan Manning and his wife Bethany of Stephentown, NY, grandchildren Katie and Jenni Delasco, Brittany Salvi, Landon Manning, sister Peggy Moore and her husband Tom of Chester, MA, four brothers John Carpenter and his wife Judy of Hinsdale, MA, Michael Carpenter and his wife Corky of Russell, MA, Leo Shartrand and his wife Corrine of Arizona, David Carpenter and his wife Tinamarie of Pittsfield, MA, his mother Anita Shartrand of Russell, MA and many nieces and Nephews. PITTSFIELD- William F. Reynolds, 80, of 588 East St., died Sunday, January 24, at Berkshire Medical Center, following a short illness. Born April 20, 1929 in Pittsfield, the son of William R. and Florence Meyette Reynolds, he attended Pittsfield Public Schools. Mr. Reynolds was a bus driver for 12 years, and owned his own business in Maine. He leaves his wife the former Lynn Pomerance, whom he married July 13, 1985. Mr. Reynolds is survived by his daughter Nicole Hamilton of Texas, sons Duane Reynolds of Maine, Ronnie Reynolds of Tennessee, William Reynolds of Florida, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a sister Shirley who resides in California and a cousin Louie Reynolds of Cheshire MA. FUNERAL NOTICE- Funeral services for William F. Reynolds will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Pittsfield Cemetery.
